WSOP 2009 – Ten World Championships

The 2009 World Series of Poker is almost upon us, and there are some exciting developments to look forward to in this year’s series. One great new feature of the World Series of Poker is the fact that there are so many championship events.
In the early years of the WSOP, the only major championship event was the no limit hold’em main event. Although there were many talented players who specialized in poker games other than no limit hold’em, there were only preliminary events for them to demonstrate their skills.

Ten Championship Events in the 2009 WSOP

Today, things are different, and players can fight for championship bracelets in 10 different $10,000 events. The events available for championship competition are seven card stud, seven card stud eight or better, pot limit Omaha, Omaha eight or better, limit hold’em, pot limit hold’em, mixed hold’em (part limit/part no limit), no limit hold’em (the main event), heads up no limit hold’em and mixed game, which is a combination of eight different games held in rotation, the eight games being 2-7 triple draw, limit hold’em, Omaha eight or better, razz (seven card lowball), seven card stud, stud eight or better, no limit hold’em and pot limit Omaha.

What to Expect From Ten Championship Events in the 2009 WSOP

Most of these events will probably get only a few hundred players, those who have spent years mastering the particular game or games being offered. The no limit hold’em main event, of course, is expected to garner thousands of entries, over six thousand, if recent previous years are any indication.

What the Championship Events in the 2009 WSOP Mean

The winner of the no limit hold’em event is the one that will be recognized as the true world champion, as is tradition. In addition to being the longest standing $10,000 event, it is the easiest to televise, meaning more players can follow the action and learn the route a player took to his championship.
That being said, holding a seven card stud world championship bracelet, or a pot limit Omaha world championship bracelet or a mixed game world championship bracelet really gives the winner just as much validity to call themselves a world poker champion as anyone else.
