Everyone is becoming Deborah Harry from Blondie! Let me elaborate. The whole point of Blondie was that it was a Marilyn Monroe tribute act. They probably sold more posters than they did records and since paper is dirt cheap, they made a lot of money.
It was the ultimate multi marketing exercise as done by Jordan (Katie Price), Anna Kournikova and Jade Goody. Lets be honest, Blondie traded on derivative musical themes and the prettiness of the singer. It was always style over content and making the most of what little talent they had.
What does my analysis mean? Well nothing really just that it is not cool to go overboard about a musical act which traded on the appearance of the singer and call them ground breaking. Debbie Harry and Blondie were never going to change the world but she was always going to open the door for a manipulative personality who could multi-task in the endeavour to make money.
Would Blondie have been as popular if Debbie Harry was ugly? She was unusually older when she became famous, but, with the Marilyn Monroe look she was able to get away with the age thing (Marilyn Monroe died when she was 36, Debbie Harry was famous when she was 30+).
Is criticism about the fact that Debbie Harry copied Marilyn Monroe worth while or even justified? Probably a bit unfair, but legitimate. Debbie Harry wanted to be famous and pursue her creative side and she has ever reason to do this so. Are we are probably being misogynistic in our critique, probably not, however, we may be unduly unkind in making Blondie the female equivalent of Take That or One Direction.
