Anyone who watched TV and liked music must have liked the Monkees at one point in their lives. The engaging yet manipulative TV show, featuring four people who never really knew each other, put rehearsed within an inch of their lives to perform as a low rent Beatles. It worked spectacularly!
Davy Jones out of the band was I supposed the equivalent of Paul MaCartney. Being the good looking, but, non-threatening boy next door type, he constantly stole the show with his cheeky chappy persona. Fathers tolerated him, mothers wanted to mother him, school girls wanted to date him and school boys wanted to have his lifestyle. He had it all with ease.
Being the template of the ultimate manufactured boy band brought him massive fame and riches but that never seemed to go to his head. He knew what he was good at and he stuck too it making loads of money while apparently enjoying himself.
Always non-controversial, always pleasant, he played his life role sympathetically. He must have had a dark side but it never showed except for his divorce’s which are part of the Hollywood program. Constantly doing reunion shows must have grated on him, but, he consoled himself with the fat check for being so professional.
Not only was he professional, he never seemed to aged! That’s why when the news of his death has prompted a large number of shocked comments on the various message boards. The shock was that he was 66! He never ever looked a day over 40.
It was lucky for us that he choose to be actor/singer and not a jockey as he was being trained to ride horses for a living. This show that he would have been life’s natural winners in what ever profession he chose.
His biggest influence on popular music is probably the creation of David Bowie. David Bowie’s real name is David Jones, but because it would have led to confusion, David Jones became David Bowie and the rest as they say is history.
So for those who missed out on the joys of The Monkees here is some classic turns and skits featured on children’s TV shows on most Saturdays.
